Footwear Trends for the Summer

By Lydia Burton, on 08/05/09.

An assortment of the trends heavily influencing shoe design for Summer 2009

The footwear trends for summer 2009 are all very glamorous; there has been a great revival for bold colour and unique creativity in shoe design.

Neon and strong colours are going to be really popular this season. The magazine Elle recommends that “when it hots up: keep clothes simple and add a pop of neon colour with accessories”. For this we suggest the following styles: Menbur Cherry and Rotta Empress.

In complete contrast, nudes are also a key trend for the season. Vogue trends encourage readers to “Embrace Fashions softer side in tones of Cafe au lait”. The catwalks have been crammed with peachy tones and warm toffee colours. This is a really easy trend to follow, it will suit all ages and is a lot more subtle than the vivid neon trend. If you are a fan of this trend we recommend the following styles: Hispanitas Illinois and Rotta Ming.

1980’s fashion has had a huge comeback this season, and with the popularity of the BBC series Ashes to Ashes and the reforming of iconic bands such as Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran it comes as no surprise. This trend adds a really fun element to the Summer footwear in store, and polka dots prints are everywhere at the moment. If you would like to try out some 1980’s inspired footwear we suggest the following peep toe shoe: HB Italy Athena.

Monochrome is another huge fashion hit for the season. It continues to be a dominant look even after its initial success last winter. Life and Style magazine loves the classic black and white combination that has become a favourite of designers explaining that “it is by the far the most wearable and durable trend”. If you are a fan of the style of Givenchy, Karl Largerfield and Christian Lacroix who have all featured monochrome in their collections for the season then we suggest the following footwear: Hispanitas San Fransisco, Menbur Strawberry and Peter Kaiser Erla.

Nautical pieces have survived the winter lull and have returned as a popular trend for summer 2009. The trend has a huge following and has been worn by Celebrities such as Siena Miller, Agyness Deyn and Alexa Chung. If you would like to replicate the trend why not try the following styles: Wonders Oval and Josef Seibel Lorraine.

Sky High stilettos are definitely not for the faint hearted but are a fantastic choice for real statement footwear. The telegraph claims that Gwyneth Paltrow is to blame for the trend, it writes, her “love affair with super high heels has led to a stampede from shoppers to buy skyscraper stilettos”. If you are brave enough to try the trend we recommend the following very glamorous styles: Unisa Nene, Rotta Flash.

Femininity has heavily influenced the catwalk and all the trends for the summer have embraced their elegant features. It appears that the perfect girly finishing touch to the fashions of the summer seems to be bows. Elle approves of the trend stating that “bows add feminine flirt and fun to everything” If you wish to find an elegant and feminine style of shoe finished with a bow the following are perfect choices: Peter Kaiser Kati, Peter Kaiser Sylvia.
